The focal point in this residential wine room is the peninsula display that cascades from the back wall towards the center of the wine cellar. It holds the bottles in a staircase-like pattern, adding character to the wine display. Moreover, it provides a tabletop where the client can decant and serve wines.
The Perfect Type of Wood for the Wine Racks and Pane
The right material for your wine racks plays a crucial role in achieving the look that you want for your wine cellar. In this impressive project, Blue Grouse Wine Cellars utilized Walnut wood, known for its distinctive characteristics.
It is a popular material among woodworkers because of its durability, resiliency, attractive grain pattern, and color. Its color depends on which part of the tree the wood came from. If it is from the innermost portion of the tree, it has a rich, dark color with some reddish rays and gray streaks. As it ages, it can exhibit a lighter color. The Walnut wood features straight grain and sometimes, curls or knots.
It can go well with any finish. In this project, the Walnut wood wine racks are dark, showing attractive hues and patterns, especially on the peninsula tabletop.
Other properties of Walnut wood that make it ideal for building beautiful custom wine cellars are:
- Durable but not heavy
- Has high resistance to warping, shrinking, and decay
- Has high susceptibility to insects
- Offers a smooth finish
- Has good shock resistance
- Easy to work with
Other Elegant Features that Make this Traditional Wine Cellar in Vancouver Stand Out
In addition to the appealing wine racks, Blue Grouse Wine Cellars incorporated stylish features of this traditional wine cellar in Vancouver. They always want to bring spaces to a new level.
Wine Cellar Door
The door has a frame made from the same material used for the wine racks, which is solid Walnut. The center of the door is made from thermally insulated glass to help prevent condensation from forming around the doors and inside the wine room. It is equipped with weather stripping to seal all the gaps around the door help regulate the conditions in the wine cellar.
Wine Cellar Lighting and Flooring
To illuminate this traditional wine cellar in Vancouver and highlight some of the sections of the racking, Blue Grouse Wine Cellars installed LED lighting above the high reveal display row and in the bulkhead. They installed raised, insulated flooring, which is made of light-colored wood, creating a beautiful contrast with the rustic wine racks.
An LED lighting system illuminates the wine cellar dramatically without compromising the quality of the wines. LED lights are known for their low heat emission, preventing the wines from heat damage. Moreover, using them will reduce energy consumption and have a longer lifespan than other lighting options. If you want to safeguard your wines and save money in the long run, LED lights are the perfect option.
Wine Cellar Cooling System
There was an existing window opening, which Blue Grouse Wine Cellars used for the self-contained (through the wall) wine cooling unit. Based on the heat load calculation, the Blue Grouse’s HVAC specialists chose a Whisper Kool Extreme 5000TiR refrigeration unit.
It is located at the top section of the back wall just above the waterfall display peninsula. They created a louvered grill cover made of the same material used for the wine racks to make it look like it is part of the racking. The control panel was installed beside the wine cellar door to allow for easy monitoring and control of the conditions in the wine cellar.
