When designing and building a wine cellar in Vancouver, Canada, you need to consider what wine racks to use. Generally, people choose from two basic types of wine racks: modular and custom. Some pick one and some pick the other. But it’s also possible to have both types in one wine cellar. Blue Grouse Custom Wine Cellar builds a beautiful wine cellar in Canada with modular and custom wine racks.
Why Do Wine Collectors Need a Wine Cellar?
Wine collection is a fun hobby, but it won’t be so fun if the wine you collect gets ruined after some time. Besides the fact that wine is costly,it should be protected from going bad, because then you lose the whole purpose of collecting it if you won’t be able to enjoy it.
Wine needs to be stored in a place where the temperature and humidity are kept in controlled levels. The most ideal place to store them is in a wine cellar. Commerical and residential wine cellars that have the appropriate wine cellar cooling unit installed can efficiently and effectively provide the ideal temperature and humidity that wines need to age properly.
Designing and Building a Wine Cellar in Vancouver, Canada
You can be sure that your wines are kept safe by making sure that your wine cellar is built properly. Blue Grouse Wine Cellars is one of the many wine cellar design and construction companies in Canada. They are reputable for building beautiful quality wine cellars. They offer their clients a 3D drawing of their desired wine cellar during consultation, so that they can have a visual of what they intend to build.
This consultation process is an essential part of the wine cellar design planning, because through it, the wine cellar expert can create a wine cellar design that suits the client’s storage needs, style preference, and available budget. One of the things discussed during the consultation phase is the wine racking for the wine storage room. Basically, clients choose either modular or custom wine racking.
1. Modular Wine Racks
Modular wine racks, also known as kit wine racks, are ready made wine racking systems that can easily be installed into a wine cellar. You can choose from a variety of styles and sizes. You can also add more modules into the existing ones if you want to expand your wine collection
2. Custom Wine Racks
Custom wine racks are for those who want to customize what their wine racking looks like. Generally, people want customizable wine racks, because unlike modular wine racks, there are no limits to what design and style you can create with custom wine racks.
There are instances, though, that the clients will choose to have both modular and custom wine racks; just like one of Blue Grouse’s wine cellar projects.
Blue Grouse Builds a Modular Wine Cellar in Vancouver, Canada with Elements of Customization
Blue Grouse Wine Cellars has built many wine storage solutions in Vancouver, Canada. One of their most successful projects was this modular wine cellar that had elements of customization. Most of the wine racks in the cellar are modular, but some parts had to be customized, like the counter top, the panel, and the louvered grill.
The louvered grill was custom-made using the same wood that the modular wine racks were made of. It was made to conceal the wine cellar cooling unit. Most wine cellar owners want their wine cellar refrigeration units concealed, because they are unsightly and do not match the wine storage room’s design. The wooden grill, though, was made to be removable, so that the cooling unit can be accessible for maintenance and control.
There was also an electrical panel that the client wanted to conceal, and so a wooden door was created so that the panel can still be accessible when necessary. This customized area created a little feature area, with a small display shelf that added an accent to the wine cellar design.
The client also had an LED track lighting mounted to the wine cellar ceiling. Track lighting is a good choice for highlighting certain areas in the wine cellar to increase its aesthetic appeal. LED lights were chosen, because unlike incandescent light, LED does not emit excessive heat that can damage the wines. Moreover, LED lighting does not consume as much electricity as other types of lights, and therefore, the client will save more in the long run. LED lighting was used in all the lighting fixtures of this wine cellar, including the rope lights that run along the display rows in order to highlight the wine bottle labels. The client, like most wine collectors, wanted to have the best wine bottles in their collection visible for guests. Having a display row with adequate lighting to highlight the labels is the answer to flaunting prized wines.
Diamond X bins were also included to accommodate larger wine bottles. These bins have removable slats, in case the client wanted to put in wood boxes with the wine bottles inside.
The wine racking, both modular and custom was made from All Heart California Redwood, but the counter top was made from African Mahogany, which is a very close match to Redwood.
There is still a lot of room for expansion in this wine cellar, and since it is made up of mostly modular wine racking, the client can always add more wine rack kits to accommodate more wines bottles.
