The fact is that all pressurized HVAC cooling equipment will leak refrigerant eventually. Keep your cooling system consistently functioning properly by having it checked and maintained regularly.
There are 3 common methods of detecting refrigerant leak in a cooling unit. They are the following:
1. Ultraviolet Light Freon Leak Detection Method
The UV Light Method, also known as the Spectronic Method, is the most accurate way of detecting Freon leak and identifying its exact location. In this method, an HVAC technician injects a UV light detectable liquid tracer or dye in the wine cellar refrigeration system. The liquid tracer is allowed to circulate through the system for approximately 2 to 4 weeks. It exits together with the refrigerant through the leak sites.
After the UV detectable tracer has thoroughly circulated the cooling system for about a month, the HVAC technician uses a UV light inspection lamp to scan for the dye. The UV dye glows when illuminated by the light, and thus identifies the exact site of the leak.
2. Freon Electronic Method of Leak Detection
The Freon Electronic Leak Detection Method is the fastest way to determine the location of refrigerant leaks in a cooling equipment. It is also very easy to use because the technician simply utilizes an electronic sniffer to identify the general leak area.
Most HVAC professionals recommend wrapping the suspected problem area in plastic to capture fumes. This can help the electronic detector determine the Freon leak location more accurately.
3. Bubble Leak Method of Refrigerant Leak Detection
Liquid solutions are used in the Bubble Leak Method of detecting refrigerant leaks. These solutions produce bubbles when they are placed over a leak. There are many options of how to apply these solutions, and these include spraying, brushing, immersing, or dabbing.
Most HVAC experts only use the Bubble Leak Method after utilizing other detection methods. They use this method simply as a confirmatory procedure. Besides being messy and tedious, this procedure can be time-consuming. It can also be stressful to clean and remove the residue of the liquid solutions after performing the method.
